U.S. Parks Services Ranger Justin Cawiezel speaks about the importance and history of Scotts Bluff National Monument and the history of the Oregon Trail.

As immigrants passed through the shadow of Scott’s Bluff National Monumnet a degree of awe must have over-taken them.  Written diaries are all we have of those encounters with the North Platte Valley as they made their way to distance lands on the West Coast of North America.

Scotts Bluff wasn’t just the bluff that over-looks Gering and Scottsbluff, Nebraska.  The area to the South known as the Wildcat Hills were also considered Scott’s Bluffs.

Eagle Rock is the northerly bluff that makes up the Scotts Bluff National Monumnet. Referred to as "Hells Gate" by immigrants of the mid to late 1800's. The pass became open in 1853 after construction was completed by a Garrison at Fort Mitchell.- Photo: Hawk Buckman
